Traffic is encouraging, but visits alone do not pay the bills. Before spending more on ads, work out whether your store has a technical checkout problem, a weak offer, or visitors who are not ready to buy. Use this nine-step checklist and record what you find.
1. Place a test order
Use Shopify's supported test-payment method, not a real customer's payment details. Check the product page, cart, checkout, confirmation, and fulfillment email. Test on mobile too. A working storefront does not guarantee a working purchase journey.
2. Check mobile usability
Open your store on a real phone. Are buttons easy to tap? Does the first screen explain what is being sold? Do images load, and can shoppers find shipping, returns and contact information without hunting?
3. Compare traffic quality
Separate visits by source, landing page and country in your analytics. A viral social post can attract curiosity rather than purchase intent. Compare add-to-cart and checkout rates by source rather than judging total sessions alone.
4. Make the offer unmistakable
Your product page should say who the product is for, what buyers receive, how delivery works, and what makes it useful. For digital goods, show the file format, language and access instructions.
5. Surface total costs early
Unexpected shipping, taxes or currency changes can cause abandonment. Verify that the final price matches what shoppers reasonably expect and that your policies are clear.
6. Strengthen trust
Provide real contact details, transparent policies and genuine examples. Avoid fabricated testimonials, false countdowns or unsupported earnings claims.
7. Check page speed and errors
Use PageSpeed Insights and browser testing to identify large images, unstable layouts and broken buttons. Prioritize actual problems on your highest-traffic pages.
8. Review abandoned checkouts
Look for patterns in checkout abandonment and verify whether recovery emails are enabled and compliant. Do not assume every abandoned checkout can be recovered.
9. Measure the funnel
Track product views, add-to-cart events, checkout starts and completed orders. Make one improvement at a time and compare results over a meaningful period.
