Shopify Store Not Showing on Google? An Indexing Checklist

If your Shopify store is not appearing in Google, start by distinguishing discovery, indexing and ranking. A page can be indexed yet rank too low to appear for your chosen search.

1. Check the exact URL in Search Console

Use Google's URL Inspection tool for your homepage and an important product page. Look for whether Google considers the URL indexed, the selected canonical URL and the last crawl information. A site: search is only a rough check, not an authoritative index count.

2. Inspect your sitemap

Shopify generally provides a sitemap at /sitemap.xml. Open it in your browser and submit the correct property sitemap in Search Console. A submitted sitemap helps discovery but does not guarantee indexing.

3. Check robots directives

Review /robots.txt and page-level robots meta tags. Ensure important public pages are not unintentionally blocked or marked noindex. Avoid changing robots rules without understanding their effect.

4. Verify canonical URLs

Check whether your preferred domain redirects consistently and whether the page's canonical URL points to the intended page. Duplicate URLs with tracking parameters or alternate domains may consolidate under one canonical.

5. Confirm page accessibility

Open the URL in a private browser window. Check for password protection, missing pages, redirect loops and server errors. A successful admin preview is not proof that Google can access a page.

6. Make the page useful

Give each product a descriptive title, a distinct explanation, clear specifications and original content. Avoid publishing many near-identical articles solely to capture keywords.

7. Add internal links

Link to important products from relevant articles, collections and navigation. Use descriptive anchor text so people and crawlers understand the destination.

8. Request indexing carefully

After fixing a genuine issue, use URL Inspection to request indexing for key pages. Repeated requests are not a shortcut to ranking.

9. Monitor outcomes

Review the Pages indexing report and Search Performance report over several weeks. Track impressions, clicks, queries and landing pages. Document changes so you can tell which fixes mattered.
