Shopify Profit Margin Calculator: Formulas and Worked Examples

A product that sells for more than it costs is not automatically profitable. To estimate your Shopify margin, include product costs, payment processing, packaging, shipping subsidies, advertising and any other variable cost per order.

Profit, margin and markup

Profit per order = net sales revenue − total costs attributable to that order.

Profit margin (%) = profit ÷ net sales revenue × 100.

Markup (%) = profit ÷ cost × 100. Margin and markup are not interchangeable.

Worked example

Suppose your net sales revenue is 100 RON. Your product costs 35 RON, processing fees 4 RON, packaging and shipping subsidy 11 RON, and advertising cost allocated per order 20 RON. Your estimated contribution profit is 30 RON, or a 30% contribution margin. This is not necessarily net business profit: fixed costs, returns and other expenses may still apply.

How to calculate your own result

  1. Choose one consistent tax treatment. For VAT-registered businesses, distinguish VAT collected from revenue retained.
  2. Record the actual selling price after discounts and refunds.
  3. Subtract cost of goods or digital delivery costs.
  4. Subtract payment processing, fulfillment, advertising and transaction costs.
  5. Divide the remaining contribution by net revenue to get the contribution margin.

Common mistakes

Do not calculate margin from list price when most customers use a discount. Do not omit payment fees or return rates. Do not treat revenue as cash available to withdraw. For digital products, remember platform fees, payment processing, refunds and acquisition costs even when inventory costs are low.

Can you use a spreadsheet?

Yes. Put net revenue in cell B2, product cost in B3, fees in B4, fulfillment in B5 and advertising in B6. In B7 enter =B2-SUM(B3:B6). In B8 enter =IFERROR(B7/B2,0) and format as a percentage. This simple worksheet is a calculator you can build immediately; this article does not claim an embedded interactive calculator is already available.
